Biomedical Engineering Institute

The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Institute is to create and apply advanced decisions for health care using electronics, telecommunications and IT growing fields. All that could be used for researches, diagnostics, therapy, health monitoring and prevention.

1975 Were started investigations in the field of ultrasonic biomedical engineering at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).
1991 Scientists researching in this topic formed a research group.
1994 That group have served as the basis for the foundation of a scientific laboratory in the Faculty of Telecomunications and Electronics.
1995 Was founded biomedical engineering laboratory - the base for students and doctors of philosophy studies with help of academic laboratory and Theoretical Radio Engineering Department.
1996 In collaboration with Lithuanian Society of Biomedical engineering organized the first International Conference of Biomedical Engineering.
1999 Was founded Biomedical engineering institute of KTU.
2001 Organized the 5-th International Conference of Biomedical Engineering.
2006 Organized the 10-th International Conference of Biomedical Engineering.
2011 Organized the 15-th International Conference of Biomedical Engineering.
2014 In case of changes of KTU main logo, no longer used the logo of Biomedical engineering institute.
2014 Were founded four different research fields laboratories.

Research Fields

Physiological and biomechanical information sources and sensor investigation – new medical and biomechanical information sources, intelligent sensors and transducers and their wireless networks for physiology, movement analysis and ultrasonic (as well as nonlinear interactions) tissue for diagnosis, development and research.

Biosignals processing methods researching – adaptive and model-based parallely registered biomedical signals processinhg and applications for monitoring and diagnostics.

Research of medical image processing methods and algorithms – medical images processing based on models and parameterization for increasing a clinical value.Ultrasound methods and technologies for tumor diagnosis and treatment

  • Ultrasound expert system: Intraocular tissue differentiation.
  • Tuning ultrasound exposure in sonoporation.

Bachelor Studies

Biomedical Engineering Institute is a coordinator of studies program "Biomedical electronics". These studies are carring out at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Masters Studies

"Biomedical Engineering". A graduate has multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in biophysics, human physiology, methodology of biomedical engineering, medical electronics, clinical engineering, digital processing of biomedical signals and images, biomedical visualization systems, and medical informatics, and is able to integrate the acquired interdisciplinary knowledge and problem solving skills when designing and implementing systems of biomedical diagnostics and therapy in clinical practice, is able to plan and develop an experiment and prepare its mathematical model, control tools of mathematical modelling, and to interpret and critically asses the results obtained.
