Department of Environmental Technologies

Predecessor of the Department of Environmental Technology – Department of Urban Sanitation – was established on 15 August 1940 at Kaunas University. Founder of the department as its first Head was prof. Steponas Kairys. Later, until 1956 department was called Department of Water Supply, Sewerage and Plumbing and it prepared engineers specializing in water supply and sewerage; since 1978 – technologists of rational use of water resources and treatment of industrial waste water. In 1988 department was titled Department of Engineering Ecology and continued its activities at KTU Faculty of Chemical Technology. In 2014 department was renamed Department of Environmental Technology.

Mission of Department of Environmental Technology – performance of world-class research, preparation of highly qualified specialists, graduating from Bachelor, Master degree and Doctoral studies of environmental engineering, who are marketable at national and international level and able to apply acquired knowledge in scientific and practical activities.

Activities of the Department of Environmental Technology:

Pedagogical – department coordinates implementation of first and second cycle study programmes "Environmental Engineering". Strategic priority for improvement of study programmes – study programmes, distinguished by content and teaching quality, which are competitive at international level. Students can use up-to-date study literature, laboratory equipment for determination of pollution, means of computer-aided and technological modelling.  Study programmes of Bachelor and Master degree are conducted in Lithuanian and English languages.

International student exchange – close relations between department's lecturers and colleagues from foreign universities provide students with great opportunities for temporal studies abroad. Student exchange programmes ERASMUS, ERASMUS+ open the doors to the schools of high education in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Turkey, etc.

Scientific – department's scientific group perform researches in the area of Environmental technologies. Researches are performed using the potential of high technologies and interdisciplinarity. Lecturers, who actively participate in scientific research activities, increasing number of scientific publications in internationally acknowledged publications, and defended theses ensure unity of science and study process.

Cooperation – departments aims to achieve closer cooperation with business and social partners in study process and introduction of innovations. Department maintains close links with partner companies: UAB "Kauno vandenys", UAB "Kauno švara", UAB "Evikta", UAB "Eneka", UAB "Žalvaris", UAB "Ekofiltras", etc. and constantly look for new contacts.

 
 
 
 

Studies

In 2012-2013 Environmental Engineering study programmes was updated while implementing a project of the European Union Social Fund Agency. Studies combine technological, analytical and management aspects of environmental protection. Aiming to develop a holistic approach to environmentally friendly technologies, studies combine traditional methods for pollution reduction and prevention, promoting interdisciplinary approach to the environmental issues. During studies each student implements a scientific research project in one of the following areas: treatment of industrial waste water, improvement of ambient air quality, processing of solid waste. Students have a possibility to join implementation of scientific research projects, performed at the Department of Environmental Technology.

The most talented graduates of one of Master degree programmes can continue their studies in Doctoral studies in the field of Environmental Engineering and Landscaping.

Research

During the last decade department developed a network of scientific partners. It cooperates not only with other departments of KTU, but also with Lithuanian partners (VFTMC FI, VGTU, ASU) and foreign colleagues. A long-term cooperation agreement is signed with Dutch Centre for Sustainable Water Technology (WETSUS). Department represents the University at the cluster Balticnet PlasmaTec (Germany). Department's scientific group performs research of polluted environments (air, water, soil), improves processes, methods and technologies in the following areas: 

Reduction of emissions of ambient and indoor air pollution;

Waste management;

Water treatment processes.

In 1985 L. Kliučininkas graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI). In 1990 he defended his PhD thesis in the branch of technical science. During the period of 1998-2007 he worked as the Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering. Since 2013 L. Kliučininkas holds position of professor and since 2014 he is the Head of the Department of Environmental Technology.
