Department of Polymer Chemistry and Technology

Department of Organic Technology was established on 12 April 1922; it prepared specialists of chemical technology. The founder of the Department and its first Head was the first Rector of the University of Lithuania prof. Jonas Šimkus. In 1940 during soviet reformation of Lithuanian higher education colonel assoc. prof. dr. Juozas Vėbra was appointed as a Head of Department of Organic Technology. After the war, since 1944 Department was managed by  Vytautas Šukys. In 1946 engineer Jonas Venskevičius became the Head of Department of Organic Technology. In 1950, after establishment of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, Department of Organic Technology became a part of this institute. In 1951 Departments of Organic Technology and Organic Chemistry were merged and in 1965 they were separated again. The Head of Department of Organic Technology remained assoc. prof. Jonas Zdanavičius. In 1972 he was replaced by prof. Adolfas Paulauskas.  In 1991–1995 Department was managed by assoc. prof. Rimtautas Kavaliūnas. In 1996 prof. habil. dr. Juozas Vidas Gražulevičius was elected as a Head of Department of Organic Technology. In 2006–2010 Department was managed by prof. dr. Jolanta Liesienė. Since 2011 Department has been managed by Juozas Vidas Gražulevičius. In 2013 Department was renamed Department of Polymer Chemistry and Technology.

Objective of the Department – preparation of highly qualified specialists of polymer chemistry and engineering and scientists of high international level, who apply the results of their research in world-class innovations.

Studies

Department coordinates implementation of first and second cycle study programme "Applied Chemistry". During studies each student implements scientific research project in the field of Chemistry, Material Engineering or Chemical Engineering.

Department offers a range of first and second cycle study programme modules in Chemistry, Chemical technology and Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology. Also, third cycle (Doctoral) study programmes in Chemistry, Chemical engineering and Material Engineering.

Research

Scientific work is performed by two scientific groups of the Department:

Scientific group of materials chemistry

Group leader – prof. habil. dr. by Juozas Vidas Gražulevičius. Members - prof. dr. Gintaras Buika, doc. dr. Jolita Ostrauskaitė, prof. dr. Saulius Grigalevičius, vyresn.m.d. dr. Ramūnas Lygaitis, vyresn.m.d. Jūratė Simokaitienė, vyresn.m.d. dr. Asta Dabulienė, m.d. dr. Aušra Tomkevičienė, vyresn.m.d. dr. Dmytro Volyniuk, pr.vyresn.m.d. dr. Jonas Keruckas, vyresn.m.d. dr. Dalius Gudeika, m.d. dr. Viktorija Mimaitė, lekt. dr. Audrius Bučinskas, pr.m.d. dr. Nadzeya Kukhta, pr.j.m.d. Ramin Pashazadeh, pr.j.m.d. Xiaofeng Tan, PhD students – Rita Butkutė, Sigita Kašėtaitė, Gintarė Kručaitė, Rasa Keruckienė, Daiva Tavgenienė, Tomas Matulaitis, Eigirdas Skuodis, Gintarė Kaminskienė, Yan Danyliv, Iryna Hladka, Galyna Sych, Oleksandr Bezvikonnyi.

Areas of group's scientific interests: synthesis and research of organic polymeric and low-molecular weight electro active materials (semiconductors, emitters, nonlinear optics materials), synthesis of materials for laser writing or 3D printing, development, research and application of biodegradable polymer materials. Mostly it focuses on organic semiconductors. Hole, electronic and bipolar semiconductors, both low-molecular and polymer, are synthesized and researched. Thermal, optical, photo physical, electrochemical, photoelectrical characteristics of synthesized materials are investigated. The main areas of application of synthesized materials: organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic (solar) cells, organic flat screen transistors.

Group closely cooperates with Lithuanian and foreign physicists and scientists creating optoelectronic and electronic devices. Group implements projects of various grades, funded by international and national institutions, including the Programme "Horizon 2020". Students of various study cycles actively participate in implementation of these projects.

Group actively receives patents for the results of its work and publishes them in highly rated international scientific journals. During the last decade the group published more than 260 scientific articles in the international scientific journals, included in Web of Science database and registered about 50 patents.

Polymer modification and application research group

Group leader – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rima Klimavičiūtė. Members - lecturer Dr. Odeta Baniukaitienė, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kęstutis Beleška, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Joana Bendoraitienė, lecturer Dr. Paulius Pavelas Danilovas, junior research associate Dr. Edita Mažonienė, Dr. Laura Pečiulytė, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramunė Rutkaitė, Prof. Dr. Virgilijus Valeika, senior engineer Violeta Valeikienė, PhD students – Dovilė Liudvinavičiūtė, Vesta Navikaitė-Šnipaitienė, Alisa Palavenienė, Deimantė Simanavičiūtė.

Research interest areas: synthesis and modification of polymers, polymer complexes formation, studies of their properties and applications.

Scientists of the group investigate synthesis of starch derivatives, containing cationic and/or anionic groups, including those in the form of nanomaterials, and their applications in destabilization of dispersed systems; immobilisation of bioactive compounds into natural and/or modified polysaccharides and their applications for biodegradable active food packaging; formation of complexes of natural polysaccharides and natural phenolic compounds as well as applications in targeted medical products. Macroporous structure cellulose gels are also developed and their applications in protein chromatography, formation of bandages for deep wound treatment is investigated. More ecologically efficient technologies of leather processing are developed as well as the problems of use of leather processing waste are solved.

Group members closely cooperate with the scientists of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland), Helmut Schmidt University (Germany), University of Kharkov (Ukraine), University of Porto (Portugal), Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design (Ukraine), Leather and Footwear Research Institute (Romania), University of Twente (Netherlands), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland), Izmir Institute of Technology (Turkey) etc. The group also collaborates with Lithuanian companies, such as AB „Kauno vandenys“, AB „Sūduvos vandenys“, UAB „Kėdainių oda“, UAB „Odos gaminiai“, UAB „IOCO Packaging“, UAB „Biochemlit“ etc.

The research projects of various scale are implemented by securing national and international funding. Furthermore, students of various study cycles are actively involved in the projects implementation.

Scientists of the group publish their research results in international scientific journals as well as develop applications for industry. During the last ten years more than 60 scientific articles were published in the international scientific journals, included those included in „CAWoS“ („Clarivate Analytics Web of Science“) database, Lithuanian patents were registered as well as two licences were sold.
