Faculty of Chemical Technology was established on 9 December 1947 at Kaunas State University, which was reorganized to Kaunas Polytechnic Institute on 31 October 1950 and became Kaunas University of Technology on 30 October 1990.

Office of Chemistry (Chemical Technology) at Technical Faculty of the University of Lithuania, established on 12 April 1922, can be considered the beginning of the Faculty; it consisted of Department of Organic Chemical Technology and Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology. This office was active as Department of Chemical Technology at Vytautas Magnus University in 1930-1940, later at Kaunas University and since 1950 as Office of Chemistry (Chemical Technology) at Technological Faculty of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, including Departments of Physical, Inorganic Technology, Organic Technology, Chemical Industry Processes and Machinery, and Physics.

Established Faculty included Department of Physical Chemistry (in 1950-1970 it was called Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry), Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Department of General Chemistry and Department of Inorganic Technology were separated from this department in 1964, in 1950 it was transformed into Department of Silicate Technology, Departments of Organic Chemistry and Organic Technology. Department of Food Product Technologies was separated from the latter in 1951.

In 1956 Departments of Organic Chemistry and Organic Technology were merged into one Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology, which was divided into two independent departments – Departments of Organic Chemistry and Organic Technology on 1 September 1965. Also, the established Faculty contained Department of Chemical Industry Processes and Machinery until 1956, for a while in contained Departments of Peat Industry (1951-1956), Leather and Textile Product Technology (1956-1962) and Pedagogics and Aesthetic Education (1962-1973). Office of Evening Studies was active in 1963-1989 and Office of Extramural Studies was established in 1987.

Department of Engineering Ecology was established in 1988. Institute of Synthetic Chemistry was established in 2005, in 2010 a modern Food Science and Technology Competence Centre was equipped using the funds of Faculty and EU Cohesion Fund; it employs experienced scientists and technologists of food science field. In 2013 Departments of General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry were merged into one Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. Department of Engineering Ecology was renamed Department of Environmental Technology, Department of Food Products Technology – Department of Food Science and Technology, Department of Organic Technology – Department of Polymer Chemistry and Technology.

Currently Faculty of Chemical Technology consists of 6 Departments (Department of Environmental Technology, Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, Department of Food Science and Technology, Department of Organic Chemistry, Department of Polymer Chemistry and Technology, Department of Silicate Technology), Institute of Synthetic Chemistry and Food Science and Technology Competence Centre.

About faculty

"Vision of the Faculty of Chemical Technology – becoming the most significant institution in the country, preparing highly qualified specialists of chemical industry and performing relevant scientific research of good quality in the areas of chemistry, chemical engineering, food technology, biotechnology and environmental engineering.

We can already sincerely rejoice that graduates of our faculty are particularly valued by representatives of the industry.

Also, we can be reasonably proud of the team of qualified lecturers and researchers: the results of our performed scientific research are published in scientific journals of high level; we constantly perform national and international projects and improve equipment for science and studies, as well as laboratories and other material base.

We know that we are facing a period of very active and busy work, because social and demographic changes of our country certainly have influence on the entire infrastructure of studies and scientific researches. However, we strongly believe that decades of faculty's collected intellectual potential and motivated, enthusiastic students will continue successful creation and nurturing of the atmosphere, which is favourable for fulfilment of dreams and development of new ideas."
