Department of Architecture and Urbanism

Studies of architecture in Kaunas were taught since 1921. In 1971 departments providing studies of architecture were moved to Vilnius. Recently 23 full-time lecturers, including 9 doctors of science and 11 experienced practitioners of architecture work at KTU Department of Architecture and Landscaping, which was restored in 1995, and in 2014 it was titled Department of Architecture and Urban Development. Head of Department – prof. dr. Kęstutis Zaleckis.

Department is a full member of EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education) and ENHSA (European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture).

 
 
 
 

Department coordinates study programme Architecture of first and second cycle, Department of Architecture and Urbanism supervises the students of doctoral study programme History of Art.

Study modules curated by the Department are taught in the following first cycle study programmes of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture: Civil Engineering, Construction Technologies, Engineering Systems of Buildings, Heritage Protection, and Urban Engineering.

Department's first and second cycle study programmes for architecture were attested without additional conditions by the international commission of experts in 2008.

  • Research of aesthetic, sociocultural and ecological potential of landscape and its components
  • Research of visually perceived spatial structure of landscape, its assessment and regulation using planning and designing instruments, applying principles of sustainable development; research of spatial structure of purposefully formed and pre-existing cultural landscapes, its assessment in terms of sociocultural, economic and ecological aspects; analysis of landscape assessment possibilities; analysis of expression of provisions of sustainable development in architecture, construction activities and heritage protection.
  • Research and modelling of patterns of townscape development
  • Modelling of urban spatial structures, change of urban genotypes and phenotypes, research of space syntax, complex assessment of urban potential.
  • Dendrological and landscape research of green areas
  • Dendrological and landscape assessment of parks of Lithuanian former manors and parks of post-war period. Architectural and dendrological research of graveyards.

Information is being prepared.

  • Analysis of metafunctional aspects of urban structures, which are existent, under renovation or newly planned, using space syntax, fractal analysis and other methods.
  • Creation of scenarios for development of existent and planned urban structures, based on their genotype analysis.
