Department of Building Energy Systems

Department of Building Energy Systems was established in 2014 (after reorganization of Departments of Geoengineering and Graphic Works).  Recently it employs 15 lecturers, who work in the following scientific and study fields: microclimate of buildings, energy efficiency and engineering systems, renewable energies and smart technologies in construction. Head of Department – assoc. prof. dr. Andrius Jurelionis.Experiments and research are performed in laboratories of microclimate, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and hydrolics. Department employees maintain close links with scientists, specialists of production institutions from Denmark, Cyprus, Malta, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Estonia and other countries, as well as faculty's graduates.

Also, lecturers of Department of Building Energy Systems participate in public education activities: participate in events and exhibitions "Researchers Night", "Spaceship Earth", "Technorama", publish articles in web portals and journals (delfi.lt, "Kauno diena", "Structum"), are guests in LRT shows.

 
 
 
 

Department provides a Bachelor and Master degree study programme "Engineering Systems of Buildings".

Study programme is designed for preparation of highly qualified specialists, capable of designing energy efficient engineering systems for buildings: heating, ventilation, water supply, etc., work in the area of building design and construction project management. It is particularly focused on practical application of theoretical knowledge, performing designing tasks and research, working individually and in team.

Graduates are capable to select rational solutions for buildings, taking into consideration compatibility of engineering systems, effective management, impact on people, environment and energy costs. Graduates have fundamental knowledge of construction engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, etc., which is necessary adapting to changing professional environment and requirements.

Research fields

1. Microclimate; technologies for heating, ventilation and air conditioning

Microclimate of buildings includes thermal comfort and quality of air in the premises. Research of air movement in the premises, microclimate, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are performed using modelling software for air and liquid movement and experimental research in climate chamber. Modelling software is applied for analysis of dispersion of pollution in closed premises, assessing conditions of thermal comfort in buildings and premises of special use (premises of data centres, etc.).

Research of effectiveness of thermal comfort parameters, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems is performed.

2. Technologies for sustainable development, energy and renewable energy sources.

This area of research includes energy economy and rational use in buildings, heat generation using geothermal, solar and wind energy systems. Research of energy costs in buildings are performed, methods for management of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are created.

3. Smart environments and information technologies.

Research oriented towards computer methods for design of construction and engineering systems of buildings, management and control of these systems, building operating modes.
