Department of Building Structures

Department of Building Structures was established in 1970. Recently it employs 12 lecturers, specializing in the following fields of studies and research: structural mechanics, bases and foundations, calculation and designing of building structures, computer calculation of structures, dynamics of building structures. Head of Department – assoc. prof. dr. Mindaugas Augonis.

Major part of research by Department employees is performed at the Research Laboratory for Building Structures; research of metal and wooden structures is performed at the training laboratory, using test stand.

 
 
 
 

Department of Building Structures coordinates a second cycle study programme "Civil Engineering".

Study modules curated by the Department are taught in the following first cycle study programmes at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture: Architecture, Engineering Systems of Buildings, Construction Engineering, Construction Technologies, Urban Engineering and the following second cycle study programmes: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering.

Research of strength and deformability of building constructions

Research is performed by analysing new rational building structures, possibilities of their application, methods for static calculations of building structures, calculation of construction characteristics and their determination via experiments, introduction of effective construction materials in building structures, forecasting of resources of building structures, application of specialized computer programs for calculation of various structures of buildings and constructions, influence of long-term loads to mechanical characteristics of building structures.

Dynamic research of structures

Research is performed by analysis of the impact of dynamic loads on various building structures, including bridges and viaducts, unevenness of road surface and its impact of dynamic indentations, impact of dynamic loads on mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete structures, modelling of dynamics of various mechanical systems, describing vibrations of elastic structures

  • Determination of strength, rigidity and cracking characteristics of bended steel and wooden elements, reinforced concrete beams and plates;
  • Tests of reinforced concrete, steel and wooden structures with application of dynamic loads;
  • Determination of mechanical characteristics of reinforcing steel products and welded connections;
  • Determination of short-term and long-term deformations in building structures;
  • Determination of characteristics of primer;
  • Determination of characteristics of strength and deformability of larger size building structures or products;
  • Determination of characteristics of anchoring of reinforcing steel in concrete.
