Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department was established on 1 January 2014 on the basis of Departments of Mechanics of Solids, Engineering Design and Theoretical Mechanics. One of the biggest Departments of the Faculty continues scientific research of the employees of the above-mentioned departments and curates study programmes of Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor and Master degree) and Sports Engineering (Bachelor degree).

8 professors, 25 associated professors and 3 lecturers doctors perform educational and scientific research work at Department of Mechanical Engineering. Department’s employees teach general engineering subjects (basic knowledge of mechatronics and engineering, machinery elements, theory of mechanisms and machinery, measurements, mechanical vibrations, finite element method, computer-aided-design, theoretical mechanics, resistance of materials, etc.) and special subjects (monitoring and diagnostics of rotating machinery, mechanics of polymeric and composite materials,  mechanics of robotics, cutting processes and tools, etc.) to the students of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Design and other University’s faculties. Department is waiting for curious, active, enthusiastic and creative students, who seek for innovative and modern scientific knowledge.

First tier university study programmes (Bachelor degree)

Mechanical Engineering
The program is offered for those who are interested in machinery and mechanisms of different types, who wish to develop the abilities to design mechanical devices and their parts, develop manufacture technologies and organize their production processes, design, perform maintenance of manufacturing facilities and solve other problems in engineering. Graduates from the programme will know engineering and computational mechanics, methodologies of product and technologies development, methods of experimental research, are able to formulate and solve engineering problems in the field of mechanics, design products of mechanical nature applying modern 3D CAD systems (Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks), are able to develop manufacturing technologies, write programs for modern metal cutting machinery applying MasterCAM and Solid Edge software, perform management and safe exploitation of technological (mechanical) systems. The program graduates are successfully employed by industrial enterprises of Lithuania and foreign countries , as the development of industry, there is a need of professionals in this area.

Sports Engineering

Mechanical Engineering
The program is offered for those who are interested in design of mechanical systems, applied computational mechanics, manufacturing technology, materials engineering.
Graduates of program are able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of robot mechanics, tribology, strength, reliability and quality assurance principles applied for structures as well as the methods of adaptive mechanics, vibration theory, numerical engineering, and modern manufacturing technologies. The students acquire knowledge and understanding of computerized manufacture integration methods; develop awareness of the possibilities and limitations of integrated engineering systems. They are able to select and apply modern materials, carry out computational and experimental research, develop innovative products and processes.
Graduates of the study programme „Mechanical Engineering“ are successfully employed by industrial enterprises of Lithuania and foreign countries because of constant need for such kind of specialists due to industrial development.

  • Assessment of resistance, modelling and experimental research of composite and metal structures.
  • Constructions of materials and structures and dynamic mechanical tests.
  • Computer simulation, numerical analysis using advanced computer methods for three-dimensional geometric simulation and finite element analysis, and latest specialized and universal CAD/CAE software.
  • Static, kinematic and dynamic computer-aided engineering analysis of individual elements of mechanical and biomechanical systems or their combinations under the impact of constant and variable power, kinematic, temperature, etc. loads, optimization of structures in terms of weight, strength, ergonomic and other parameters. Computational analysis of gas or liquids (external flow and streams in closed channels).
  • Development and improvement of technical products and technological systems, mechanical production technologies; preparation of computer-aided working (production) documentation. Technical expertise of technological lines and other technological systems according to criteria of functionality, reliability, durability, quick operation, etc. Assessment of solutions for technical projects.
  • Development of systems according to the needs of disabled people, development and improvement of sports equipment (unstable training equipment with regulated loads), research of sportsmen’s movements.
  • Research of vibrations of mechanical systems using non-contact methods.
  • Research of deformations of mechanical, optical and other systems using non-contact methods.
  • Application of high frequency vibrations for improvement of technological processes.
  • Research of various surfaces using optical microscope (magnification x1000).
  • Creation of computer-generated holograms, based on 2D digital photographs.
  • Measurements of diffraction efficiency of periodic microstructures and assessment of geometric parameters.
  • Theoretical and experimental research of systems with antifriction and hydrodynamic bearings: monitoring of machinery’s technical condition, identification and elimination of vibration sources, defect diagnostics, development of prevention methods for unexpected failures and their introduction to industrial companies.
  • Development of periodical and stationary installed systems for monitoring, protection and diagnostics (MDS), which are used for designing of new machinery and renovation of very expensive critical machinery that is already in service.
  • Theoretical research related to development and research of new dynamic models for nonlinear rotating systems, using numerical methods.
  • Antifriction bearings. Methods and measures for assessment of technological quality of individual elements of new bearings.
  • Dynamics and diagnostic research of technological and energy equipment for ships.
  • Research of dynamics and accuracy of precision mechatronics systems.
  • Research of influence of temperature errors in converters of precision code displacement measurement to measurement uncertainty.
  • Integration of MEMS to complex systems.
  • Development of methods for identification of a person’s conditions, systems for monitoring and assessment of functionalities and physical condition of soldiers, which are active on the basis of mobile communication equipment.
