Department of Transport Engineering

Department’s activities began in 1922, when the first lectures on subjects of railroads, locomotives and wagons, internal combustion engines, basic aviation knowledge, shipbuilding were taught at the Faculty of Technologies at the University of Lithuania in Kaunas.

In 1944 University’s Faculty of Technologies included Department of Vehicles at the Division of Mechanics. In 1950, after reorganization of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, there was Department of Automobiles at the Faculty of Mechanics. In 1970 this department was transferred to Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute. In 1991 studies of automobiles and tractors were started at KTU again and in 1993 Laboratory of Transport Means was established, managed by prof. Algirdas Jurkauskas. In 1995 Department of Transport Engineering was established at the Faculty of Mechanics, managed by prof. Algirdas Jurkauskas. In 1998 prof. Jonas Sapragonas was elected as the Head of Department, and since 2008 until now department has been managed by prof. Artūras Keršys.

Each year Department of Transport Engineering organizes international scientific conference “Transport Means”.
Department’s employees perform many local and international scientific projects.

Personnel of Department of Transport Engineering – 3 professors, 8 associated professors, 2 lecturers and 1 assistant doctors, lecturer and chief researcher. Young scientists, who defend their thesis, join the team of Department’s employees.

Department of Transport Engineering performs Theoretical and applied research on the following subjects:

During analysis of development of transportation system and trends of research in this area KTU researchers of transport engineering field, who participate in the activities of ECTRI (European Conference of Transport Research Institutes), EURNEX (European Rail Research Network of Excellence) and FISITA (International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies), emphasize focusing of international scientific community and authorities, responsible for making of transportation policy, on pollution caused by transportation and studies of development trends of sustainable transportation system.

  • Reduction of pollution caused by transportation
  • Energy preservation and safety requirements in all transportation system (transportation means, terminals, logistics, traffic management )

Applied works:

  • Development and application of innovative research methods and solutions for transportation constructions, transportation means and their flows;
  • Identification of zones of congestions in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda and methods for calculation of losses suffered due to traffic congestion;
  • Creation and development of safe, sustainable and competitive transportation and logistics systems;
  • Introduction of measures and methods for decision making aimed at environmentally sustainable transportation systems;
  • Technologies for clean production of biofuel in Ukraine and Lithuania;
  • Safety assessment model for advanced monitoring systems of road accidents;
