Design Thursday #8: Cultural Revolution

2017-03-08 11:00

On Thursday, 9 March at 7pm the eighth lecture from the Design Thursdays cycle will take place. Stefania Silvestri, General Secretary DesignLibrary Milan will deliver a seminar on the 70’s design, which is a part of the cycle “The Future in the Past”. The seminar will take place at DesignLibary Kaunas, at KTU Santaka Valley.

The 1970s was an era of fuel price increases, rising insurance rates, safety concerns, and emissions controls. The 1973 oil crisis caused a move towards smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles. Attempts were made to produce electric cars, but they were largely unsuccessful.

In the United States, imported cars became a significant factor for the first time, and several domestic-built subcompact models entered the market.

Design trends in the 1970s were marked by a backlash against the bright colours and futurism of the 1950s and 1960s and a rise in popularity of dark, earthy tones with extensive use of brown, green, purple, and orange. Darker colours not only reflected the back-to-nature mind-set of the decade, but the sluggish world economy with its lowered optimism and expectations for the future.

Wood decor and panelling was integral to 1970s interior design as well, replacing the obsession of the 1950s and 1960s with chrome and aluminium.

The seminar will not only introduce the design trends of the certain times, but also will help to connect them to the today’s world, will help discover the “future in the past” and vice versa.

“The aim of these lectures is not only history as such, but also the design icon’s importance for the public. When analysing history and various objects in it, we also talk about the things that can be transformed by people and adapted to the everyday life. About their influence to the future tendencies. One of the main goals of these seminars is to create relationship between past and future”, says Stefania Silvestri, who will deliver the lecture this Thursday.

She reminds that DesignLibrary is not a “library” as such, but rather a network of contacts, knowledge and culture, which joins together people and companies.

The lecture is free for DesignLibrary members.

DesignLibrary Kaunas is mutual project of KTU Design Centre and DesignLibrary Milano.

The aim of the Project is to diffuse&share design culture, raise awareness about design, promote the collaboration between studies, arts/science and business through design.
