KTU traditionally engages in research of physical, technological and social sciences, and experimental development, while research of biomedical sciences and humanities is also promoted. Research Overview for 2015-2016.

University has 8 research institutes.

Protection and commercialisation of KTU research production has been delegated to the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre.

 
 
 
 

 

Research and Innovations

KTU is founder of 2 integrated centres of science, studies and entrepreneurship – "Santaka" and "Nemunas" valleys. National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre, which unites activities of valleys "Santaka" and "Nemunas", was established in 2014. Lithuanian intellectual, administrative and financial potential is expected to be concentrated here, creating the largest park of applied scientific research and innovations in Lithuania.

In 2015 KTU scientists performed 7 Horison 2020 projects, 15 projects of Seventh Framework Programme (7BP),  participated in 35 COST activities, published more than 460 articles in international publications of foreign publishers.

University publishes five scientific journals refereed in "ISI Web of Science" database: „Elektronika ir elektrotechnika", "Information Technologies and Control", "Mechanics", "Materials Science", "Engineering Economics“.

The first and most modern Food Science and Technology Competence Centre in Lithuania is active at KTU since 2010; four unique semi-industrial lines of food technologies (bread, beer, meat, fish, dairy products) are installed at the centre.

Department of New Business Development "StartupSpace" was established at KTU in cooperation with Aalto University (Finland); it has become a space where youth creates innovative business, based on technologies, receive consultations from business professionals, find partners in foreign markets. 

14 November 2014 was a day of the official opening of one of the largest and most modern in the Baltic Region open access KTU Science and Technology Centre and Technology Business Incubator at “Santaka” valley. Potential of science and studies of particularly promising fields – sustainable chemistry and bio pharmacy, future energy and mechatronics, information and communication technologies – is concentrated at KTU Science and Technology Centre and Technology Business Incubator, together with business companies, closely cooperating with education institutions.

  3. Insurance of attraction and development of talented and motivated Lithuanian and foreign Doctoral and post-Doctoral researchers, and becoming internationally recognized school of Doctoral studies and joint study programmes;
  4. Collection, maintenance and development of potential of researchers of high international level;
  5. Promotion of development of centre of scientific research of high international level.

Scientific Journals

In 2012 electronic publication system Open Journal Systems (OJS) was installed for publishing of KTU scientific journals. It provides a possibility for interactive (on-line) organization and management of all stages of publishing of scientific journals, from submission of manuscripts to publication in Open Journal Systems system. Currently fourteen KTU scientific journals are uploaded in the system.

Researcher's career

Researcher's career begins after graduation from Doctoral studies and successful defence of Doctoral thesis. Recruitment system of academic employees of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) clearly defines the path of employed scientist to professor/chief researcher and provides scientists with a possibility of rational distribution of their time for scientific researches, pedagogical and expert activities. Essential principle of recruitment system – selection to announced job positions is performed under procedure of public international competition and candidates must demonstrate their potential to climb academic career ladder.

All candidates must have PhD degree and prove their potential to perform independent scientific research and/or pedagogical activities working at a certain job position.

Persons, applying for position of lecturers and researchers, except scientists trainees, are employed for 5 year term of office under procedure of public competition. Candidate's compliance with requirements of a certain job position is evaluated according to the number and level of scientific articles, also significance of international certificates, science monographs and book chapters, textbooks for schools of higher education, published by internationally recognized publishers, patents, experimental and social development works.

Scheduled attestation of lecturers and researchers is announced by Rector at least 3 months before the end of term of office. Attestation is for verification of lecturer's or researcher's compliance (and extent of such compliance) with qualification requirements determined for his/her job position during term of office. Requirements are applied in proportion to full-time/part-time taken job position.

Employment contract of indefinite duration is made with the person, who wins a competition for the same job position of lecturer or researcher twice in a row. Such person is attested every 5 years under procedure established at the university. Employment of the person, who is not attested, is terminated. A person is appointed to higher position of lecturer or researcher under procedure of public competition.


Scientist trainees Young scientists are invited to have their post-doctoral training at KTU, where they are provided conditions to prepare for individual research work initiating pioneering research topics and innovative projects, increase their scientific, pedagogical and academic management qualification.  Persons are admitted to position of scientists trainees for a maximum 2 year period, which may be extended for one year.


Researchers A scientist can take a position of a researcher. Researcher must perform scientific research and experimental (socio-cultural) development; announce the results of this activity in international scientific publications with a citation index.


Senior Researchers A scientist can take a position of a senior researcher. Senior researcher must supervise scientific research and experimental (socio-cultural) development; announce the results of this activity in international scientific publications with a citation index.


Associate Professors A scientist or an acknowledged artist can take a position of an associate professor. Scientist, who takes a position of an associate professor, must teach students, perform scientific research and experimental (socio-cultural) development, and announce the results of this activity in international scientific publications with a citation index. Acknowledged artist, who takes a position of an associate professor, must prepare professional artists, teach students and participate in artistic activities.


Chief Researchers A scientist can take a position of a chief researcher. Chief researcher must prepare scientists, supervise scientific research and experimental (socio-cultural) development, and announce the results of this activity in international scientific publications with a citation index.


Professors A scientist or an acknowledged artist can take a position of a professor. Scientist, who takes a position of a professor, must prepare scientists, teach students, perform and supervise scientific research and experimental (socio-cultural) development, announce the results of this activity in international scientific publications with a citation index. An acknowledged artist, who takes a position of a professor, must prepare professional artists, teach students, participate in artistic activities and/or form scientific research fields and supervise them, announce research results in international scientific publications.


Guest lecturers and researchers KTU can invite lecturers and researchers to work under fixed term employment contract for a maximum period of 2 years.

Coordination and Research Activities

Department of Research Affairs organizes and performs planning and accounting of the University's scientific activities, analyses, summarizes and collects information and scientific activities of students and employees, exchange of researchers, performs accounting of lecturers' scientific work. National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (NIEC) unites and integrates activities of science and business valleys „Santaka“ and „Nemunas“. The aim is to create the proper conditions for high-quality research services to businesses by „one-place“ principle and with this make the interaction processes between science and business more effective. Other, no less relevant NIEC activity area is technology development and its commercialization processes coordination by helping to create and develop businesses companies and to attract the necessary investment.

Evaluation and Recognition of Diplomas of Foreign Schools

Lithuanian legal system requires that foreign candidates provide a certificate of assessment of academic qualifications issued by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education in Lithuania for the complete application procedure.

Constitution and Calculation of Competition Grade

Competition grade for admission to doctoral studies equals to the sum of  weighted average of grades in diploma supplement, certifying the award of qualification degree of Master of Science or adequate qualification and evaluation in ten-point grading scale of scientific activity (publications or scientific project, scientific activity, recommendations of scientists and interview), multiplied by weighted coefficients.  Meanings of weighted coefficients are established by Doctoral Studies Committees.

Application fee

Application fee is 35 EUR for citizens of Lithuania and EU countries, and 100 EUR for citizens of non-EU countries.
Applications are not considered complete and will not be reviewed until the fee has been paid. The application fee cannot be waived nor deferred, and is non-refundable.

Scholarship

Doctoral students studying in state-funded positions receive monthly scholarship, i.e. 395,20 EUR per month during the first year of studies, and 456 EUR per month during 2nd-4th years of studies.

The Doctor of Science degree is awarded to an individual who has widened his scope of knowledge in a selected field and in related fields and has also attained some original scientific research results and defended a thesis. Individuals aiming to achieve the Doctor of Science degree are required either to take the doctoral programme or to prepare and defend a thesis without attending lectures.
The maximum period for completion of the doctorate is four years. Each doctoral student is assigned a research supervisor. The doctoral student together with their research supervisor produces a course plan and thesis schedule for the entire doctoral period and selects the thesis topic. The doctoral student must pass doctoral level exams in at least four subjects (30 ECTS credits). The best students have the opportunity to perform research or to study a part of their study programme at the universities of other countries. Each doctoral student is also expected to perform research and to collect data for their thesis. The doctoral student must also be engaged in pedagogical work, the volume whereof is set by the Senate.

Kaunas University of Technology welcomes students from other institutions to study with us undertaking intensive doctoral study modules.

Kaunas University of Technology offers an opportunity for students from various fields to enhance and deepen their discipline specific knowledge and professional skills in international research environment. A wide range of programmes combine opportunities for intellectual and personal growth with immersion in another culture.

Duration of each course: one-two weeks.
Course fee: 1 ECTS credit = 90 EUR (please note: travel, visa, health insurance, room& board expenses not included). For students on Erasmus+ exchange programme the intensive modules are free of charge.

The 2nd PhD Summer School will take place on 21-25 August 2017 at the Lithuanian seaside resort Palanga.
The aim of this PhD Summer School was is develop essential skills needed for scientific writing, project proposals writing and management, data management planning, and open access.

Support and Funding for Doctoral Students

Scholarships

Doctoral  studies may be funded by Government of the Republic of Lithuania. The total number of doctoral student admissions at the University is determined with respect of the amount of subsidies allocated by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and additional funds for doctoral student preparation set aside by the University. Admission quotas are set for every subject area. Doctoral studies may also be funded by the student or other interested organizations.

University’s doctoral students, accepted to state-funded positions, are entitled to irreclaimable financial support – scholarship.

Doctoral Fund

The objective of KTU Doctoral Fund is to give a support to doctoral students for doctoral studies at Kaunas University of Technology, scientific creative activity, preparation of theses and articles. Each doctoral student is elligible to apply for up to 1000 Eur for doctoral studies, and up to 1000 Eur for scientific research once during the period of his/her doctoral studies. Funds are allocated by competition procedure. It is awarded by the permanent commission set up by Rector's order.

Calls for applications for Doctoral Fund grants are announced ~3 times per year.
