PhD Summer School 2017

A warm welcome to the website of KTU International PhD Summer School!

Kaunas University of Technology and a partner of ECIU, the University of Stavanger, organise the 2nd PhD Summer School, dedicated to development of transferable skills. The event will take place on August 21-25, 2017 at seaside resort Palanga. Doctoral students with strong intellectual curiosity will have an opportunity for exploration and cultural enrichment.

Basic Info

KTU International PhD Summer School aims to:
- equip participants with essential skills that are necessary in all fields of science;
- provide participants a valuable chance to network with participants form other countries;
- share a friendly social environment, and an exciting time at the seaside resort Palanga.

Prerequisites. The summer school is held in English. In order to participate, doctoral students should have sufficient language skills.
Group size: 50 doctoral students.

We will provide each participant with:
* 3-day training courses,
* meals (4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners, 6 coffee breaks)
* welcome pack, 
* a certificate of participation including 2.0 ECTS credits.

Registration fee is 250 EUR.
(Within 5 days after submitting of the application, the participant will receive conditional acceptance letter with bank details for the registration fee to be paid before the deadline)

The participant takes responsibility for his/her travel, insurance, accommodation, and extra activities expenses.

Please note, that according to Resolution of the Municipal Council of Palanga a local charge (1 EUR per person for 1 overnight) is collected, and it is an obligatory levy for accommodation for one overnight stay per person >>Palanga local charge. This charge is not included in participation fee.)

Flavien Massi


Flavien Massi has more than 7 years experience in innovation and project management and is currently working as a senior consultant with Intelligentsia Consultants Sàrl (Luxembourg). He has degrees in innovation & project management (BSc, University of Belfort) and European innovation project & technology transfer (MSc, University of Angers). Flavien Massi is specialised in the management of scientific proposals for European funding programmes. He wrote several successful FP7 and H2020 projects in different fields of S&T (e.g. material sciences, additive manufacturing, logistics, agri-food, etc.) and is the coordinator of two of them.

During the last years he has developed a portfolio of training courses on innovation-related topics such as creativity, innovation management, problem solving, project management, etc. Flavien Massi has also worked for 2 years (2013-2015) with the department of Organic Chemistry at Kaunas Technical University (Lithuania) as innovation manager and trainer.

Lynn P. Nygaard


Lynn P. Nygaard is a special advisor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo, and doctoral candidate at the Institute of Education, UCL. She is the author of Writing for Scholars: A Practical Guide to Making Sense and Being Heard (2nd edition, SAGE, 2015) and Writing Your Master’s Thesis: From A to Zen (SAGE, 2017). Her research focuses on academic writing, gender, research productivity, and the path to professorship.

Jacek Fiutowski


Jacek Fiutowski is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of Nanophotonics group at Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark. He has a Ph.D. degree from the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland.  His research interest involves: nano-optics, plasmonics, nonlinear and ultra-fast optical studies of organic materials as well as micro and nano-fabrication. He is a reviewer for many scientific peer-reviewed photonic journals as well as the author or co-author of more than 40 scientific publications.

Sarah Jones


Sarah Jones is Associate Director at the Digital Curation Centre, a service providing best practice and support on research data management and digital curation. She coordinates work on the DCC’s Data Management Planning tool - DMPonline - and undertakes research on data policy and data management planning. She has written several articles and book chapters on these topics, and co-edited Delivering Research Data Management Services: fundamentals of good practice. Sarah provides advisory services, training and consultancy via the DCC and is involved in the EC-funded FOSTER+, OpenAIRE, EUDAT and EOSC projects. Her work in a European context focuses primarily on training and data management planning to facilitate open science and compliance with Horizon 2020 requirements.




Iryna Kuchma


Iryna Kuchma is the Open Access Programme Manager for EIFL. Together with 50 partners, from all EU countries and beyond, she participates in the OpenAIRE (Open Access Infrastructure for the European Union Research) project - a large-scale initiative that aims to promote open scholarship and substantially improve the discoverability and reusability of research publications and data and  support research data management.  Iryna also manages training activities in the FOSTER+ project - Fostering the practical implementation of Open Science in Horizon 2020 and beyond.

The registration is considered to be complete only after the registration fee is paid. After you submit your registration form, we will send you an invoice of  250 euros for the PhD Summer School. After we have received your payment, we will send you an acceptance letter. Please pay the registration fee within two weeks. Your acceptance is condidtional until you have paid the Summer School registration fee. You cannot attend the Summer School if you have not paid the registration fee.

Please note: your registration and professional education will be examined, and in case of doubt your registration can be rejected.



How much time per day shall I plan for studying?

This Summer School is a full-time. Each day course consists of about 8 academic hours of instruction per day.

What kind of financial support is available for Summer School participants?

Doctoral students usually can apply to their scholarship organization or research council for a grant to cover the costs of attending this kind of event. Some universities or their departments, doctoral programs, etc. may provide small-scale grants for attending training events. Research projects funded through third party funds may also include a budget to cover members’ training needs. Please enquire your research council, local mentor, supervisor or research training group. 

Will there be internet access at the venue?

During the Summer School you are welcome to use wireless internet, which is available at the event center. Each participant of the Summer School will receive login information on the first day of their arrival. Or you may ask for login information at the Hotel 'Gabija" reception desk.

What are my chances if I am on the waiting list only?

When participants cancel their registration or when they do not pay the participation fee on time, the vacancies for other participants become available. We will inform you as soon as a place becomes available and expect you to respond quickly to our offer.

Yes, you can. For this reason you have to e-mail us.

What is the weather like in Palanga in August?

Summers in Palanga are the warmest in July and August, when average maximums are 21°C and minimums are 13°C.

When should I arrive at venue? 

The registration will take place on 21 August, 2017 from 15:00 till 18:00.
However, if you have a late flight or late arrival, you should arrive at venue no later than 8:30 on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, as the course starts at 9:00.

When should I book my travel? 

You should book your travel as soon as possible, if applicable, to arrive on time for the event and leave no earlier than 18:00 on Thursday 24th August 2017 when Summer School officially closes.
· Where possible, please fly into either Palanga Airport or Kaunas Airport which are closer to Palanga. 
· Use the train where possible; it’s better for the environment!

What should I do if I require a visa? 

Depending on where you come from, you may have to provide a formal obligation when applying for a visa at the Lithuanian embassy. Please inquire at your nearest Lithuanian embassy which documents you need for your visa application and let us know as soon as possible what type of document you will need. Your request will be processed and a soft copy of the invitation letter will be sent by email. If you require a hard copy letter, please provide a delivery address.
Please keep in mind that usaully it takes at least a week to prepare the requested documents.

What should I do if I have a special dietary need? 

Should you have any special dietary needs, please make sure you let us know when you register.

What should I do if I need a doctor or have a medical emergency? 

While in Lithuania, in a medical emergency, dial 112.

Are letters of reference required? 

At the time of application letters of reference are not required.  We will contact the supervisor(s) of shortlisted candidates if necessary.

Does the Summer School have specific language requirements? 

The Summer School language is English throughout. Proficiency in English is therefore required. A formal proof of competence in English (IELTS, CPE or TOEFL) is recommended but not mandatory.

How much is the registration fee? 

The Summer School registration fee is 250 Euros. It includes 3 full training days, meals (4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners, 6 coffee breaks), welcome pack, a certificate (2 ECTS credits).
Please note: the registration fee does not cover travel expenses to and from, health and other insurance expenses, accommodation, or leisure activity fees. What documents should I provide upon my registration? 

You will have to send a copy of your passport/or ID card and/or document certifying that you are a doctoral student to upon request.

I have submitted my application but I have not received a confirmation - when can I expect to hear something?

Some PDF documents may have an encoding or signature certification which interferes with saving the document in our system.  Therefore before trying to upload please ensure that the PDF is in the correct format or rescan.

I am unable to attend the whole school, may I still apply? 

Unfortunately the dates for the school are fixed and participants must attend the whole school without exception.
